Overview
What disease does Ciguatera cause?
Ciguatera causes Ciguatera fish poisoning when an individual consumes a subtropical and/or tropical marine finfish that have accumulated toxins naturally through their diet.
What symptoms result from this disease?
This usually causes symptoms that result in gastrointestinal, neurological and cardiovascular disorders. Diagnosis of this food poisoning is usually completely based on the symptoms.
What foods are associated with the disease
The foods and fish associated with this disease include, groupers, barracudas, snappers, jacks, mackerel and triggerfish.
What is the frequency of the disease and who is the target population?
The frequency of the disease is not known and the disease is generally non-fatal and only lasts for a short duration of time. All humans are believed to be susceptible but populations in tropical/subtropical regions are the most likely to be affected due to the exposure of toxic fishes in the area.
