Chiari Malformations and Auto Accidents

On Behalf of | May 6, 2013 | Personal Injury

For some of those injured in an automobile accident, the initial or prominent symptoms stemming from the accident may only be the tip of the iceberg. Unknown to these injured parties, the trauma sustained in the impact started a physical process that could be life-threatening if undetected. What starts as headaches, dizziness, muscle weakness, impaired vision, and impaired coordination can lead to a diagnosis of a Chiari I malformation.

Chiari I malformations usually occur at birth and are typically asymptomatic until symptoms are induced as a result of a trauma, such as an automobile accident. Most people are not aware that they have a Chiari I malformation until diagnosed by a medical professional. Diagnosis of a Chiari I malformation is made through consultations with a neurologist and are confirmed through magnetic resonance imaging. Although every case is unique, a decompression surgery of the opening of the base of the skull, known as the foramen magnum, may be required to correct the defect.

Our office has represented several clients who were not aware that they have a Chiari I malformation until they were involved in an automobile accident. Many clients initially experienced neck pain, headaches, and visual abnormalities. As the symptoms persisted and intensified over several months, a neurological evaluation was required, this in turn discovered the malformation. In most cases, one or more decompression surgeries were needed, forcing these clients to incur substantial medical expense and lost wages as a result.

Although Chiari I malformations are uncommon, continued and intensifying symptoms may necessitate a neurological visit. If you have been in an accident and been diagnosed with a Chiari malformation, contact our experienced personal injury attorneys at Milavetz, Gallop & Milavetz today at 763-560-0000 for your free consultation.
