Common delayed injuries after an accident

Being involved in a vehicle accident is not something that many of us want to deal with. However, car accidents happen every day in the state of Minnesota. While you may think of injuries happening at the time of the accident, some injuries have delayed symptoms that you should be aware of.

Back pain

A very common delayed injury that can result from a car accident is back pain. Due to the impact of the accident, spinal misalignment of the vertebrae can happen. When these vertebrae are pushed out of place, they can put pressure on the various nerves in your spinal cord. This can lead to things like pinched nerve pain, tingling sensations and numbness.

Neck pain

Just as the impact of a car accident results in back pain, it can also lead to neck pain. One of the most common neck injuries that accidents can produce is whiplash. This delayed-onset injury happens because the head is forced back into the seat of the car due to the impact of the crash. Symptoms of this condition include soreness, stiffness, pain, swelling, headaches, blurred vision and limited range of motion of the neck.

Abdominal pain

The force of an auto accident and even wearing a seatbelt during the accident can result in internal bleeding. Due to the high level of adrenaline that is reduced when a car accident happens, many patients don’t realize they have internal bleeding until hours or even days later. Some common symptoms of internal bleeding include fainting, dizzy spells, purple bruising, and abdominal pain. If you suspect that you have internal bleeding, it could be a life-threatening condition. You should seek help immediately.

There are many delayed-onset injuries that can occur due to a car accident. Many times, adrenaline releases into the body during an accident and hinders the sensation of pain in the body. If you notice any new pain occurring after an accident, it’s a good idea to get it checked out by your physician.
