Zithromax/Z-Pak/ZMax Can Cause Irregular Heart Rhythm

What is Zithromax?

Zithromax is a very commonly prescribed antibiotic that is made by Pfizer. Generic versions of Zithromax are also available. Zithromax may be prescribed for conditions such as: respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted diseases.

FDA Warning

On Tuesday, March 12th, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a new Drug Safety Communication warning that Zithromax can cause a potentially fatal irregular heart rhythm. In simple terms, the contraction of the heart becomes irregular. The FDA warning was prompted by an agency review of two studies that assessed the potential for Zithromax to cause abnormal changes in the electrical activity of the heart. In its warning, the FDA said that Zithromax can alter electrical activity of the heart, which may lead to a potentially fatal heart rhythm known as prolonged QT interval. According to the FDA, patients with known risk factors for heart disease are at higher risk. This includes individuals with existing QT interval prolongation, low levels of potassium or magnesium, a slowed heart rate, arrhythmias and those who take drugs to treat an abnormal heart rhythm.
