Our Story

Billboard for Milavetz & Associates

Milavetz Injury Law, P.A., is built on a legacy of upholding individual rights for more than 50 years. Throughout our history, we have sought to protect the freedoms that are guaranteed to Americans in the Constitution, including our First Amendment rights to freedom of speech and religion.

Making An Impact From The Outset

Front Page of Minnesota Lawyer

The firm traces its beginnings to 1963, when attorney Robert Milavetz established a solo practice. Bob had worked his way through law school while supporting a wife and three children. He served as a probation officer for the state of Minnesota and later as an attorney with Legal Aid.

Bob’s parents and family from northern Minnesota had instilled in him a strong desire to help those in need. His grandparents had emigrated to the United States, and he grew up knowing family who had experienced life under the repressive conditions of Czarist Russia. As a college student, Bob was present in Little Rock, Arkansas, in September 1957 during the integration of Central High School. He and three other University of Minnesota students were led out of town by the National Guard. Given these formative experiences, it was not surprising that Bob’s legal practice developed with a strong focus on civil rights.

Bob’s practice in the 1960s included civil rights cases, Vietnam-era conscientious objector cases and landmark First Amendment cases. He worked to give everyday people a voice in claims against the government, banks, insurance companies and other prominent institutions.

Ahead Of Its Time

In the 1980s, the firm — then known as Milavetz & Associates — helped pioneer new ground in attorney advertising. We became one of the first in Minnesota to advertise on television, billboards and the radio. We were also infamously one of the first to appear in a full-page phonebook ad.

As our name became known, the practice continued to thrive. Our team grew to include several accomplished lawyers: Jonathan Gallop, Alan Milavetz (Bob’s son), Steven Levine, Barbara Nevin and Greg Malush. As Bob’s grandson, Daniel Milavetz, has been involved in the firm while pursuing his law degree, our practice now spans three generations.

The Thread That Ties Our Practice Together

Alan Milavetz

Across the decades and generations, while adapting to the changing times, we have nonetheless maintained a core focus on our mission: to stand up for the rights of individuals. That theme has remained at the heart of our practice since the beginning. It has also surfaced in notable cases over the last decade. In 2010, for example, our lawyers won a significant victory in a U.S. Supreme Court case that reaffirmed the long-established right of attorneys to consult with their clients regarding bankruptcy debt.

Our attorneys take this mission to heart. We are socially active, giving back to the community in diverse ways. Alan has participated in a freedom march in Washington. Barbara is a leader in Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, a nonprofit organization supporting military service members, and she works as a conciliation court judge for Hennepin County. The firm actively supports Minnesota Legal Aid by participating in its clinics, and we contribute to numerous other charitable organizations. Our attorneys and staff share a passion for building community and helping clients seek justice.

We are proud of our history and look forward to the future.
